“It has to beat everybody in the segment in driving dynamics because all the Australian, UK and American journalists say ‘ooh the E46 CSL was the last real 3 Series’,”
Frohlich told motoring.com.au...
“I do not want to hear that shit anymore.”
Negative media reviews of recent BMW 3 Series generations have motivated the German car-maker to aim for new driving benchmarks with its latest mid-size luxury sedan.
Speaking at the Paris motor show last week, where the new BMW 3 Series sedan made its global debut, the company’s development chief Klaus Frohlich said the latest G20 version had to be the best driving car in its class.

I care about this stuff, but what do you think? Do mos
t buyers still care?
![]() 10/09/2018 at 15:42 |

I guarantee most won’t care.

I thought that the prototype reviews were quite good

False, the f20 was the last m3

Have buyers ever cared? People who care don’t buy new BMWs.

They were, but they better be absolute best in the segment good to get the journalists and enthusiasts to shut up. Might be tough to beat the Giulia, and from what I’ve read and seen the G70 is fantastic.
If they do make a compelling package I won’t be against the idea of going back to BMW and getting one of these:

I still think there’s a percentage that cares. But I agree it would be small and probably higher for the 335i/340i versions more than the lease-special 320i.

Yeah, but it’s good that they’re doing it for the vocal minority who do care. I guess it benefits us if we buy it a few years down the line.

Bmw is good and all, but they need to chill with their prices here; the 440i is something like 15,000USD more expensive than the stinger (with the discounts we go though, MSPR of the stinger went up)

Chill with the price? HAHAHAH they won’t give up those sweet sweet profits for anything
![]() 10/09/2018 at 15:57 |

I don’t know if the segment cares much anymore either. Competing with a C/A4 etc, who don’t put on as thick of a false pretense when it comes to sporty driving.

I mean, I’d get it if the 4gc was new... but it’s almost at the end of its product cycle
Also, the stinger gets suede headliner, its superior in every way.

I hope they figure it out as Audi and Merc are starting to eat their lunch. The last few loaners I had from BMW made me angry. Horrible cars.

Badge (and interior materials, design, etc) > price

I saw prices are increasing across the board for the 2019 Stinger. up to 2K more on some models. You get good equipment though I think people might be even more reluctant given that they’re already complain it’s too much money for a Kia

Looks like the GT1 trim is now your best bang for the buck regardless.

I remember the very first time I got the F30 328i as a loaner back in 2012. My exact reaction after the first 5 minutes were- “What the fuck is this shit?! It feels so floaty like an American car!”
The new A4 and Cclass interiors are way ahead of BMW and they’re pretty close to the F30 variants in driving as well.

I disagree. Even non-car-people can notice and appreciate a connected driving experience. For instance, th ere are plenty of people who “only drive manual because it’s fun” yet don’t really care about cars.

Its emotional marketing.
Mine i s a GT2 according to the VIN, and it was 36k.
If they sold it at 52k like in america we would’ve gotten something totally different.

Those people are a rounding error on BMW’ s bottom line.

“Let’s make it bigger”

If they want to make the 3 series great again it needs to go on a diet. And get back some steering feel.
Good luck, but I don't see either of those happening.

you know the drill ... offer a manual tranny rwd wagon and I might actually consider it.

We can all agree that the F cars were shite, but they seem to have learned from their mistakes with the G30/31 5series. So maybe they continued that trend with the G20/21? But what if they did? It would give internet haters an aneurism. “The last REAL BMW was... enter whatever here.... the new ones are all shite.”
Maybe there’s hope, maybe not.

True, but it’s good PR if auto mags love it. So maybe they aren’t doing it to target those buyers, so much as the magazines.

Maybe give it hydraulic steering again and an inline six as a base engine and we will be getting somewhere. I was given a 330i loaner once while my car was getting some work done. I liked some of what they did with the interior and I enjoyed the upgrades to the idrive but my god was the rest just so full of meh. I was really unimpressed. If you want a drivers BMW get an M car or something from 2012 and back. Their target market doesnt care about what we look for in a car.

I hope it does bother him that much to make a worthwhile impact.

The last generation showed they don’t really care what the auto mags think. The real reason I think the 3 series is getting sportier - if that’s what’s really happening - is because the people who don’t care about handling and performance are buying crossovers and SUVs, freeing them up to make the 3 series a better sports car for the buyers who actually do care. Everyone turned off by it can be upsold into an X3.
![]() 10/09/2018 at 19:47 |

In the US, the majority of buyers will walk past the new 3-series and go directly to the X3 Leasemobile Edition.
The only “proper” BMW left is the 2-series, which will be impossible to find on lots and need to be ordered to get a good one.

I took my M3 in for some repairs and I was given a white X1. Dude pulled up in it and told me this was mine.
Me: What is this?
Dude: It is an X1!
Me: Do people buy this?
Dude: Yeah, it is really popular with people.
Me: Real people? I find it hard to believe the people who made my car also made this POS.

2 of my coworkers, (one audi, the other bm w nut) always complained how the xdrive was an afterthought that ruined the handling. with 30% of US sales with xdrive, curious if better implemtation has something to do with it.
